Article.

Ricketts said he'll veto it, but votes to override it should be there (it passed 32/15).

Great news!

This will be fun to watch. Incoming India Kill Inmate Drugz... Meanwhile, Speaker of The Nebraska Legislature passes to save poor inmates including his own Grandmother! He must get the votes to repeal the veto before the medication gets there!

Do they use it often?  Isn't this just symbolism?

I think it was something like four executions since 1973. I remember seeing another article (can't post links yet) that the governor wanted to ramp up executions and recently purchased the lethal injection drugs from other states, so this could be in response to that.

Makes you wonder how partisan of an issue this actually is if you take out the pressure of the national parties' positions on the issue.

Here's the latest Gallup poll I could find:

http://www.gallup.com/poll/178790/americans-support-death-penalty-stable.aspx

TOTAL: 63% Support, 33% Oppose
DEMOCRATS: 49% Support, 46% Oppose
REPUBLICANS: 76% Support, 22% Oppose
INDEPENDENTS: 62% Support, 32% Oppose

Most interesting thing is that Democrats were in favor 75%-22% in 1994 ... that's a HUGE shift.

This is wonderful. Hopefully more of this progress will come in due time, but it's kind of depressing that this had to happen in reaction to an awful governor trying to have his state kill it's citizens at a faster rate.

Unborn babies apparently still subject to DP. what the Nebraska unicameral did today should get them primaried out.

Physically sickening betrayal of the electorate

The override was the bare minimum of the votes required. Can easily be reversed in a future session.

Not really. The pro death penalty side would need 50%+1 of votes to restore it, which means 25 votes, so 6 to 10 seats to take depending which vote you look.

Should be enough if Ricketts uses platform to reverse it and campaigns on it whenever the Unicameral has elections.

Not really, CCSF.  Keep in mind that the Unicameral is officially nonpartisan and thus so is its primary. It does help to make the Unicameral more moderate than it otherwise would be given the Republican tilt of the State. I really doubt that making wasting money trying to reimplement the death penalty will be that much of an advantage in the primary.  It already had been more than a decade since Nebraska's last execution.  Also, back in 2008, the Nebraska Supreme Court ruled electrocution was unconstitutional under the Nebraska constitution, so when combined with the fact that lethal injection is on its way to oblivion in this country thanks to the efforts of abolitionists, any attempt at reviving the death penalty in Nebraska is going to face the problem of what method to use.

CCSF is trying so hard to troll that I am amazed how smart people keep falling to his trap and answer his patently stupid posts.

Why?  They don't use it anyway.  All this hoopla is feel good bullsh**t.  It's like my 3 iron in my golf bag......an effective weapon when used properly.  I can't hit it if my life depended on it so after letting it sit for 10 years I got rid of it.

Cheer if you want, but you could have cheered for about the last 30 years in a row.

So the state will now save millions not having something they don't use. That's a positive.

Good point which I concede.  I'm more frustrated with those thinking it's a moral victory when it barely qualifies as one.  Money gets my attention.

It's not just a good point: It's the main selling that was used by proponents here to get rid of it.
