I don't think that he was that great. His laissez-faire policies helped bring about the Great Depression. It's a pity that he wasn't able to push through any kind of civil rights.

That being said, I'd say that he's one of my favorites personality-wise. A many of few, but carefully chosen, words. "You lose." "I do not choose to run for President in 1928."
