Actually sort of a quintapoint. Government controlled Syria, ISIS controlled Syria, ISIS controlled Iraq, Government controlled Iraq, and Jordan.

Where do people get these maps? They are easily the best maps of the situation I've seen around? Is there somewhere that updates them?

Wikipedia. I have no idea how accurate they are especially in those teeny villages, unless Wikipedia is actually edited by the fighters.

Yeah, don't provide a key or anything...

Who is the green in Syria? Who are the red dots?

It's kind of obvious that the dots are urban centers and Green is for the FSA or other non-IS rebel variants.

Which is weird because why isn't Damascus featured as a major urban center?

This map has been on Wikipedia for ages. It's constantly being updated and always fascinating.

I think the stuff that's too minor to be in news articles is mostly taken from what fighters post on twitter

I'm surprised the FSA controls so much territory, considering how everyone thinks they are effectively dead.

The FSA is just the facade to appeal to John McCain and Hillary Clinton. The other rebels are mostly jihadists, and include Al Qaeda.
