Probably Virginia (mostly due to NoVA), with North Carolina being a close second. I'd rank Mississippi and Alabama at the bottom. Those states have zero redeeming qualities.

I was a civil war nerd when I lived in TN, so Tennessee. Has the greatest reasons (IMO).

Well they have musical tradition and culture. They also have the New Deal Coalition, good food, and Alabama has Mobile, a decent port city with beaches. Jackson, Mississippi is a pretty good city as well. Sorry that everywhere on earth isn't like California, the perfect place.

Lol Polls holds MS and AL in a special place in his heart

If anywhere in the US can be accurately described as a pit both historically and culturally, it is them. Throw in Arkansas.

Do Kentucky and Missouri count?  Though they never officially seceded from the Union, their shadow governments were accepted into the Confederacy.  And the Arizona, New Mexico, and Indian territories were also claimed by the Confederacy.
