In 1992, Jesse Jackson wins the Democratic nomination as a result of a deadlocked convention between Bill Clinton and Jerry Brown.
Jackson now faces President Bush 1 and Perrot. Is the country ready for a black president?

Maps? Jackson's running mate?

Idk about running mates but Jesse Jackson would have gotten has ass handed to him by Bush.

Please note that this map is being very generous to Jesse Jackson as it would have likely been much worse. Jackson could have been a McGovern style disaster for the Democratic Party if not worse. Although I did think Bush would have only won with a plurality of the popular vote due to the Perot factor.

I would imagine that Perot would win at least a few states. Who is Jackson's VP candidate? Jerry Brown?

Jackson: 171
Bush: 363
Perot: 4

Bush wins in a landslide. Perot also performs better though, which is why many individual states are still under 50% and Jackson pulls out a few narrow wins like California.

345-198-4

Perot comes in second ahead of Jackson in more than a few states.

Bush would likely get reelected; I don't think America has ready for an African American in 1992.

George Bush/Dan Quayle (inc.): 328 EV. (43%)
Jesse Jackson/Jerry Brown: 210 EV. (36%)
Ross Perrot/James Stockdale: 0 EV. (20%)

It's not just that Jackson was black. Obama came off as inoffensive to moderate suburban whites with his soothing post partisan rhetoric and calling for ending racial tensions in the nation.

Jackson was a racial bomb thrower who carried with him inner city black grievances and was prone to gaffes. So adding on the natural anti black racism + Jackson's bomb throwing would make the race a landslide for Bush in 1992.

Yeah, Doug Wilder would have probably won there, but not Jackson.

Jesse Jackson is the exact opposite of a "compromise candidate".

Yes.

This was probably why Douglas Wilder was considered an alternative in '92.  The man was basically a black Bill Clinton.
