Bill Simmons has this concept in his basketball book.

Here's the idea: Pick a team 12 man roster, not the 12 best players necessarily, the team that would work the best together as a unit from all basketball history.  Assume that you can pick every player in what would be their prime.

C:  1975 Kareem Abdul-Jabbar
PF: 1964 Bill Russell
SF: 1994 Scottie Pippen
SG: 1991 Michael Jordan
PG:  1999 Jason Kidd
Back-ups
C: 2005 Dirk Nowitzki
PF: 1985 Larry Bird
SF: 2014 Kevin Durant
SG: 2005 Ray Allen
PG:  2015 Steph Curry
Utility player: 2008 Lebron James
Utility player: 1994 Hakeem Olajuwon

That would be the perfect team.  Basically, you have the best defensive team possible and the best outside shooting team possible.  You could play any style, and mix the lineups so you always had great defense and outside shooting on the court.
