The Tea Party bases it on his support for comprehensive immigration reform. Also, McCain supported cap and trade back in the day and has voted to increase the debt ceiling.

So being somewhat reasonable on some important issues precludes one from being a "real"  Republican. I see.

The 2000 primary forever defined McCain as being hostile to those of the Evengelical wing of the Party. For the libertarians, he is a passionate hawk and supporter of the NSA. For those opposed to illegal immigration, he is their arch nemesis in the party.
