All nationalism is bad, unless it is expressed ironically at a holiday BBQ or non-violently at a sporting competition.

Considering that belligerent Chinese nationalism on either side is the only reason Taiwan could ever be a flashpoint for war, it's not really a good idea. Taiwanese nationalism is superior in one respect; if both sides accept it, that makes the world a safer place.

Now Chinese history, sure, that's awesome, but Chinese nationalism, no so much.

Civic nationalism can be alright for the purpose of building solidarity within the territorial boundaries of ones country. Ethnic nationalism invites conflicts and entrenched perceptions of in-group superiority to outsiders, which is definitely "HI" material. What kind of Chinese nationalism are we talking about though? Is it the desire of some in the ROC to reunify with and assume control of the PRC, which is a ridiculous proposition, the tendency in the PRC for the Han nation to impose itself on minorities in much the way Russians did during the Soviet era elsewhere on the continent, or are we talking about something else?

If this is about the islands themselves it basically amounts to a resource-extraction-driven land dispute between an empire and two former empires, no? If the PRC wants to muscle it's way through to get its claim solidified I'm not really that dismayed or disappointed by it, and wouldn't consider it worthwhile to back Japan militarily in trying to reassert its claim. The fact these bits of rock are uninhabited makes it a lot less controversial for one of the parties involved to simply fling themselves out there militarily to end the dispute. It's not a great precedent to set, granted, but at least this is not a Falkland Islands sort of quarrel where the interests of residents are jeopardized by foreign interests.

I was told like 6,395 times not to meddle in domestic Chinese affairs...unfortunately the Chinese domicile seems to be encroaching on international and claimed lands.

So you don't have any opinions about politics in countries outside the United States?

All nationalism is horrible.  But in fairness, Chiang Kai-Shek was leagues better than Mao.

Even though there's far more to object to in China's treatment of Xinjiang.

Yep. If there's anything that Mao did right, it was crushing the religious despotism in Tibet.
