Social democrat. Believe me, I'm a social democrat here in Germany.

It isn't as though the two are mutually exclusive: the term social democrat denotes a particular sort of socialist.

That's true. In theory. But being a socialist means that you're totally against capitalism. But most european social democratic parties (like the German SPD, of which I am a member) are not against capitalism at all. At least not the more pragmatic wing.

I don't know why he used the word socialist, since he doesn't seem interested in ending capitalism. Maybe just to designate that's he's rather left-wing since in America that's what the term means.

He's a social democrat, as are most Democratic officeholders. They're just afraid to admit it.

He's a social democrat, but I imagine he doesn't want to confuse people who think "social democrat" just means a socially liberal Democrat.

Isn't "social democrat" just another word for socialist?

It doesn't really matter because he's going to be a considered a socialist by the media and voters.

Social democrats want regulations and large social safety nets, but they don't want to crush capitalism.

this was true during the time of the Second International, I'm not so sure it's true now.  social democracy indicates a sort of concession to the existence of private property, and commitment to a strong welfare state.  a 'real socialist' would be committed to nationalizing key industries.  Sanders obviously would never try to do that.

Unfortunately this is the case. I can hear the McCarthy-esque fearmongering now...
