Here you can see the former president of the Brazilian Soccer Confederation (FA) stealing a medal while he was giving the medals to the winner of naan under-20 championship, in 2012.
Of course he was arrested this week because of much worse crimes, but this image has a great simbolic value about his person.

Russia getting it was somewhat sketchy.

Qatar getting is 100% absolutely ridiculous, and made it clear that FIFA is a complete joke organization.

Russia as a host could be defended, like you said it's not ridiculous as Qatar.

Russia is a country with a serious football history, is large enough to spread the tournament around several large cities, and has never hosted the World Cup, so if you ignore certain obvious problems it would actually look like quite a good choice.  Even if you don't ignore those problems it's hardly worse than the choices made for 1934 and 1978.

Qatar, OTOH, is utterly, utterly, ridiculous.  North Korea wouldn't have been much worse.

North Korea would have been significant better, while their men's team have a bad reputation (their women team on the other hand do very well), they did qualify the last time. Qatar on  the other hand have never succeed in qualifying to the World Cup.

One day after this re-election, Sepp Blatter went off the deep end in an interview with a Swiss TV station.

Some of the highlights:

- Accusing UEFA that they're motivated by a general "hatred" against his person, and promising that he "won't forget" this.

- Implying that Prince Ali bin Hussein's candidacy was part of an American-led conspiracy against him, pointing out that Prince Ali is part of the Hashemite family which is a close ally of the United States.

The women's World Cups tends to have different countries doing well. I wonder if this scandal has any effect on the women's World Cup starting in a week.

North Korea had been in every women's World Cup for a while, but was banned for this one

Not that the people getting busted are exactly sympathetic, but how does this fall under US jurisdiction? Though it sounds as if Switzerland did its own investigation and arrests, but most of this appears to be at the request of the FBI and will involve extradition.
Most of the bribes were tied to Conmebol and Concacaf events, including USA television rights, and involved a lot of activity in the US.  Most of the defendants own residences in the USA, likely purchased as a form of laundering funds.

One of the bribes was from Nike related to the rights fees to be the equipment supplier to the Brazilian national team.  There is nothing in the indictment that says that Nike was aware of the arrangement.  In fact, their identity was protected by only mentioning Brazil and the year, and disclosing that the grand jury knew who they were.  In addition to the $160 million paid to the Brazilian FA, Nike paid $40 million to a sports marketing company which Nike could presumably acknowledge as some sort of agency fee.  The bribe was then skimmed out of that money.

Television fees for several editions of Copa American amounted to $350 million. There was an additional $110 million in bribes paid to get to those contracts.

Interestingly, one of the allegations is about bribes to vote for the candidate running against Blatter in 2011, who was then banned from soccer for life.

There w a quirky mention that Jack Warner had used his AOL account.  I don't know if that was suppose to show nexus or not.

I think the involvement of Switzerland at this point is that many of the officials would be there for the FIFA Congress, and there is a chance of getting extradition to the USA.  "Gee Sepp, I have to go to my kid's softball game/piano recital/spelling bee that last week in May", was unlikely.
