American truly is truly moving to the left on social issues.

I guess this represents a clear trend?

The 23% of pro choice voters who only support it in a few circumstances (i.e. rape, incest, mother's life) is also very encouraging.

Yep.  And that's where the Democrats lose the argument, as the mainstream position in their party now is abortion should be legal basically up until the moment of birth. That's what Republicans should focus on.  When asked pro-choice vs pro-life people think of it in absolute terms.

Someone in that group could consider finical hardship as one of the few circumstances.

Abortion is overrated in its effects as a wedge issue, anyway.

These labels aren't really that important anyway. It is certainly not true that pro life = wants Roe v Wade overturned. Polls show only around 25-30% hold that view. And only 15-20% think abortion should be illegal in all cases.

Many people are personally 'pro life' but don't think their view should be the law for everyone. And that is the more important thing from a public policy perspective.

Ironically, I changed to the other direction recently.

You know, many of the most ardent pro-lifers were formerly pro-choice and are now some of the best activists out there. Mind sharing why?

Looks like the poll bounces around a lot. I wouldn't read much into it other than that the pro-life and pro-choice sides are as ever pretty close in support.

Agreed.  I think the shift is mainly due to new laws restricting abortion access, thus causing some people to no longer identify as pro-life because they don't think even further restrictions are needed and some who were pro-life or neutral on the issue now identifying as pro-choice because they think the new restrictions went too far.

To say nothing of the new breed of Republicans who basically think using any kind of birth control whatsoever is akin to baby killing. When did a bunch of American Protestants somehow become pre-Vatican II Catholics?

I watched The Silent Scream by Bernard Nathanson and saw some debate sponsored by GWU IIRC.  I am not on-board with full abortion bans for things like rape/incest, but I'm definitely more on the pro-life side now.

I assume this was because I pointed out the true definition of what pro-choice is for some people. I should've acknowledged the numbers weren't pretty though. The trend is somewhat bad, but if it's because of Olds as the poll claims, I'll resort to the Democrats argument of "they'll be dead soon." Ha.

It'll always be 50-50. The trend doesn't scare me remotely, and I'm often the pessimist around here. It will oscillate to eternity unless something dramatic happens and nothing has. It was high in the 90s and came down and now we have another uptick. Ndb. Especially when this is just about statistical noise from Gallup of all places. You can't get a serious read on it even if these are the numbers one would expect.

Ebsy is usually a good poster but can be quite antagonistic to the right imagining Atlas Repubs as some of the horrible, disingenuous and/or uneducated real life ones I imagine.
