Soccer was invented in the Great Britain. However, it is not a popular sport in Canada, United States, Australia, New Zealand, India and South Africa (only blacks like).

Most popular sports in the USA were invented in the USA: baseball, American football and basketball. However, it is not possible to say that Americans dislike European sports, because Americans like tennis.
Ok, but now soccer is becoming a little bit more popular in the USA (see the FBI)

However, soccer is more popular in places not colonized by the British: continental Europe and Latin America

A more pertinent question is why didn't those forms of football which allow for handling of the ball and tackling coalesce into a single unified code?  That failure allowed for domestic codes that could appeal to being "our game" instead of "the game" to develop and attract followings.  Beyond that, in the United States, soccer was fatally weakened at the stage where professional leagues began to form by a dispute over which organization would be in charge of American soccer.  FIFA sided with a younger, and presumably more malleable, organization. While FIFA's choice triumphed, the dispute brought soccer into disrepute in this country at the start of the Great Depression, thus ensuring that the NFL and its gridiron style of play would become the primary form of football here.

Because it's kicking a ball and pretending to be hurt.

Is it really that different from dribbling a ball and pretending to be hurt?
