I'd say 16, as most states allow 16 year olds to work and drive automobiles as is. The extension of childhood by the state is abhorrent and should be contested at every opportunity. Instead of raising minimum purchase ages, we should be lowering them across the board and broadly rejecting this idea that the state should have the right to tell you what to do with your body once you're old enough to earn your own money and (theoretically) make it without recourse to parental aid.

The drinking age and the age for the use of currently illicit drugs (all of which should be legalized) should likewise be 16.

16 sounds reasonable. although i'm not that opposed to banning smoking. it probably wouldnt work but on the other hand there are really no benefits to it unlike some other drugs. even something like cocaine is less ridiculously bad for you and has more benefits

High schoolers should certainly not be purchasing cigarettes, what an insane position.

I support banning tobacco and replacing it with drugs that don't kill you.

marijuana has a lot of carcinogens and negative effects on your lungs and sex drive too. its just not as likely to kill you.. there is a great deal of hypocrisy and inane tribalism involved in this issue.

Plus, almost any f**king drug is poisonous to you to a certain degree. Alcohol is one of the prime offenders, and there's absolutely nothing that stops people from drinking themselves, literally, to death. Does Lief now support banning alcohol?

His political transformation over the last couple years has been ridiculous. The position doesn't even make sense. BRTDs positions make even less.

The difference between alcohol and marijuana and tobacco is quite clear:

Seriously this couldn't break down any simpler:

I don't personally disagree with you. I just don't care for implementing my own subjective tastes into law.

Normal alcohol use does not kill you or cause you illness. Normal tobacco use does. It's not comparable.

Tobacco should be banned in conjunction with a government sponsored anti-addiction and rehabilitation campaign a la Alcoholics Anonymous.

My position on cigarettes is rather complicated. I would re-classify the drug and group it with harder drugs such as heroine or cocaine, due to its harmful and addictive properties. These drugs would be legal to use but illegal to sell. For cigarettes, due to the huge addiction rates, I would create a program to distribute cigarettes (at a cost) to those addicted, encouraging them (but not forcing them) to quit. These cigarettes would be provided by the government, and not from private companies.

As for eligibility to this program, I suppose some sort of age requirement would be necessary. Of course, age is arbitrary, so I wouldn't just pick an age at random. I would define legally "becoming an adult" (aka the "age of majority") as attaining any of the following requirements:

- Graduating from high school
- Passing a citizenship test (at any age)
- Turning 21 (OK, this is may seem arbitrary, but this is the age that the brain is fully developed)

Oh, I think you're right. Never mind. Maybe make it 18, as that is the age most people graduate high school anyways.

I don't have the evidence at hand to make a choice. Whenever it is possible to stamp out tobacco addiction at a young age without causing black marketry to flare up, I guess.

You're going to have liver failure one day.

Seriously, I don't mean that maliciously. You seem to be completely unaware of the fact that alcohol is very, very bad for you, and if you support a prohibition on cigarettes than it would be very hypocritical to not support a ban on alcohol.

In a perfect world, 19, along with the drinking age, the draft age, the age to vote, etc.

That'd allow people who are clearly old enough to make that choice make it while keeping it out of high schools.
