There's nothing in it for me, and a very low chance of something that might be used against me. So no.

I do not have a choice in Mexico, alas. But in the US the obvious answer is "no".  I have no clue what s/he would want to put in there. Nor if s/he wants to do a nice little forfeiture for the benefit of her county.

Then, again, I do not drive and my wife does not want to drive in the US, so chances of me being in my own car in the US are negligible. It would have to be someone else's car, and even if I am sitting alone - especially if I am sitting there alone - I would not want to consent.

In Austria, cops can search cars whenever they want.

Which means you have no choice anyway.

Especially because the mandatory warning triangle and first-aid kit is usually in the trunk and police can check for this without notice and you have to open your trunk if asked.

Police here are also required to check cars and drivers at random to look for drunks and drug users, so if you are picked randomly for a stop-and-search operation you will have to comply.

Fascist hellhole.

I wouldn't want them to but I'd probably let them.

They are going to if they want to, just make sure you tell them you do not approve of the search.  It matters (and may save your ass if you have sh**t or they plant sh**t).  Again, this is Very ImportantTM.  Never consent to the search.  Let them, don't use force to try and stop them for Og's sake, or even verbally argue with them.  Just make sure you're clear that you do not consent to the search.  You don't have to be a dick about it like a lot of people are, which just makes everything more likely to go poorly for you.  Be polite, respectful, etc.

Probably. I mean, I have nothing to hide.

I would only refuse a search if I had nothing to hide.  Otherwise, I'm not going to increase suspicions by refusing a search.

But if the car gets searched, isn't that a guarantee that said hidden thing will be found?

Not if it's on your person or in a really good hiding spot. Then again being a well-spoken, well dressed, clean shaven white guy with no tattoos or criminal record really goes a long way in getting away with stuff like this. It's probably the main reason I don't have drug charges.
