With unemployment and corruption both on their way out, President Earl Warren and his supporters feel reasonably confident about their prospects for the upcoming election. Having defeated a surprisingly strong convention challenge by isolationist Robert Taft, who objects to the president's "preparedness" program, Warren has managed to pacify Taft's supporters by retaining anti-interventionist Vice President La Follette as his running mate. Heading into the general election, Warren faces challenges from the right and left, with Democrat Millard Tydings arguing that the president's anti-depression policies go too far and Populist William Bankhead countering that they don't go far enough. While organized labor has flocked to Bankhead and classical liberals are rallying behind Tydings, Warren and his advisors have determined to stay the course, citing the burgeoning economic recovery as proof that the country is on the right track.

The Populists have proven to be incompetent and/or corrupt crooks, and they're probably mostly silly isolationists, which is incredibly dangerous in 1940.

Hm, yes, war is really what our country needs to focus on.

Glad that our priorities are straight.

A good total war would do a lot of good for our country right now. Their are plenty of tanks and ships and guns for the unemployed to build.

It's going to be so hilarious if the Democrats go from almost winning in '36 to third place AGAIN in '40.

Bankhead was loyal to Roosevelt in most every policy, including war. However, in a situation like this with Bankhead running for the Populists against a pro-war Warren, I would expect him to go more anti-war than the incumbent and Tydings.

I guess we'd need HST's clarification on this.

Officially, all of them. After the trials of the Great War, intervention in international conflicts is overwhelmingly unpopular, so all three candidates have promised not to become involved in any "foreign" wars. That said, both President Warren and Senator Tydings privately believe that it is only a matter of time before the United States is forced to enter the conflict and will take action to prepare for that eventuality. Bankhead opposes an aggressive preparedness program, which he sees as a distraction from the economic issues at home, though he would likely declare war if the U.S. is attacked first.

1940 Presidential Election

President Earl Warren (American-California)/ Vice President Robert M. La Follette, Jr. (American): 390 Electoral Votes; 50.0% popular votes
Senator William B. Bankhead (People's-Alabama)/ Governor Joseph C. O'Mahoney (People's-Wyoming): 111 Electoral Votes; 35.0% popular votes
Senator Millard Tydings (Democratic-Maryland)/ Mr. Wendell Wilkie (Democratic-New York): 30 Electoral Votes; 15.0% popular votes

With the opposition divided and the economy rebounding, President Warren was able to coast to reelection, defeating Populist candidate William Bankhead by a 15 point margin. Thanks to his ability to appeal to traditionally Populist voters in the West and South, Warren's victory in the electoral college was even more striking. Of particular note was Warren's support amongst black voters: while the president lost the African-American vote 38-62 to Bankhead, his performance was noticeably stronger than any American Party candidate in years, surpassing even Thomas Reed's 33% in 1900.
