Former Maryland Governor Martin O'Malley quickly positions himself as the mainstream Democratic alternative to independent socialist Bernie Sanders and ex-Republicans Lincoln Chafee and Jim Webb, and is able to win his party's presidential nomination.

Meanwhile, former Maryland Governor Bob Ehrlich scores a surprise win in Iowa with 12% of the vote against a field of fifteen Republican contenders. He too goes on to win his party's presidential nomination.
