DC isn't a Democratic stronghold because of hardcore leftists, it votes Democratic because the city is populated almost exclusively by public sector workers and a plurality of the Democratic Party's ethnic base.

I've got a Republican friend in NY who views Hillary in the same context.  And, yes, she does seem to generate a focus on all of her positives and ignoring all of her negatives.  That's not any different than the GOP and Ronald Reagan, even though they wouldn't nominate him today if he espoused the same positions he did in the 1980s.

Democrats aren't cult figures; they're partisans who want to win, and her poll numbers are so remarkable that there is pressure for all of them to get behind her now and close ranks.  Her nomination offers the Democrats a sort-of having it both ways; she'll have many of the advantages of incumbency while sharing few of the liabilities.  Plus, she'll be a "first", the first "Madam President".  I truly wish the Dems would find someone else, and I certainly think that the GOP's motto ought to be "NO MORE BUSHES!", but it looks like America will have to deal with the concept of dynasties, so . . .

IMO, Clinton wins this one, because her killing a corrupt Democrat proves her bipartisan credentials, and Republicans would support her as well. In fact, if it looks like she's about to lose the General, most likely she'll admit to killing him to shore up GOP support.
