Atlas hates Ronald Reagan a lot, but does it compare to the real worst president, James Buchanan?

Doing nothing about a national crisis and letting the Supreme Court rule that former slaves aren't citizens is worse than anything Reagan did.

One of the best vs. one of the worst. Obvious choice is obvious.

Whoops, I misread it thinking it was who was worse.

Well then, I'll go with Reagan

Anyway, Meadow Mountain Massacre alone makes Reagan better, not taking into account anything else.

Reagan... At least he didn't let the Union completely fall apart and degenerate into Civil War.

Reagan is in the top 10. The other guy did nothing to save the Union from the Civil War and is the 4th worst President.

Eh, did you mean Buchanan sending an army to crush the Mormons BEFORE the Mountain Meadows Massacre? Because that happened in the middle of it, not before the Utah War.

An Great President(Reagan) vs the Worst(Buchanan), of course Reagan was better. The  left makes me laugh sometimes how much they hate Reagan just like the  right makes me laugh at their hatred for Bill Clinton

Yeah, that's what I meant.

How embarrassing, since I consider myself quite good at that chunk of history too Tongue

Either way, that war was still abominable and pretty much a distraction.

Yes...the Civil War sucked more than supply side economics. On the other hand, what could anyone have done to stop the Civil War without caving into pro-slavery demands? In a sense, I am glad we had the war and not some mangled "Grand Compromise" that would have kept slavery around for a few more decades. No, this is not a defense of James Buchanan—who ultimately just wanted to please both sides for the sake of his popularity.

I'll go with the big-spending pro-gay union leader who made abortion legal in California and set tax rates in the 30s when he could have pulled them into the 20s.

Just like Democrats are a lot prouder of Lincoln and T.Roosevelt today than Republicans are, they'll probably think more highly of Reagan too once the people who remember his presidency are dead.

You can't really compare Presidents across different historical periods.  Reagan was a horrible post-WWII 20th century President.  Buchanan was a horrible antebellum President.

Reagan is one of those horrible Presidents who we're lucky was President in the 1980s and not the 1860s or 1940s.  He was a Nazi sympathizer and would have been pro-slavery.

Wow, you never cease to amaze.

Anyway, obviously Reagan, who was a good President, over undoubtedly our worst...

I suppose you could argue that Buchanan was in an impossible situation, and the Civil War would have broken out anyway; but I feel his ineptitude was something ... special.

Reagan was just some idiot. his major success was not causing WW3, which is always a good start.

Reagan, one of the best.

And leaders with his charisma come along only once in a generation.
