He's probably our best modern president (Ford-Present) and a top 5 president of the 20th Century.

He truly is underrated. A damn shame that Reagan got credit for the success of Carter's deregulation efforts.

Agreed

But not for deregulation, but instead for a foreign policy with less tunnel vision and a far reaching environmental policy.

Don't you think Reagan and Clinton are some of the best?

Frankly, I think Mo Udall would've been better in Carter's place, assuming no Parkinsons.

I think a large portion of the forum is in agreement over this. I'm glad you've joined the ranks of the establishment DeadPrez.

He's not underrated, he's just unfairly maligned. Carter was indecisive, slow-to-act, and generally favored half-measures and compromises, but he was not a bad president all things considered.

I understand why a libertarian who prefers that the executive accomplishes effectively nothing would think this, but partisan blinders aside I think it's fairly clear that Carter was one of the most incompetent Presidents of the 20th century.

"Too many of us now tend to worship self-indulgence and consumption" - Jimmy Carter

Carter had the nerve to go there, which is perhaps leaves him a little underrated. Imagine what would happen if Obama went on television and politely explained to the American people that their freedoms are not derived from an abundance of cheap stuff to consjme. It's a shame that Carter didn't actually do anything about the problem he articulated so well...

Carter was utterly mediocre, thus making him one of our better presidents. He was an awful human being though.

Yeah, Carter had the nerve to tell a population being beaten around by insane levels of inflation and unemployment that it 'consumed too much.' What a brave man, sitting in his taxpayer-funded mansion, with his legions of servants, and his personal airplane (paid for by the American people, etc)

Being a "good person" doesn't make a good president or leader.

He simply wasn't a good President, regardless of how "nice" he seems.

He was good at the peanut industry. That should have been his ceiling.

Yes, he was the only president honest enough to admit that the American people are decadent, apathetic, and wasteful.  He cared more about ensuring Americans peace and a better future without resorting to violence than anyone else who held this post.
