Welcome all to our 2008 Election Night Coverage. This is certainly a historic election night. Four years after his narrow defeat by John Kerry, former President George W. Bush is running to become only the second President -- and the first since Grover Cleveland more than a century ago -- to serve non-consecutive terms.

Last time, John Kerry won with 284 Electoral Votes -- let's put that map up, shall we?

Anyway, John Kerry began his Presidency with high hopes, but it has taken a real nosedive in the past four years. The War in Iraq has gone badly, the economy has gone into recession, and let's not forget the sex scandal which forced Vice President Edwards to resign, and be replaced by freshman Illinois Senator Barack Obama.

After all that, the President's approval rating hovers at about 25%, and we fully expect the Bush-Giuliani ticket to decisively defeat the Kerry-Obama ticket. The first polls will close right after this commercial break, so stay tuned!

Interesting premise. I can't say that I've heard of it before. I'll be watching this one.

Couple of ?'s, not to be a spaz of course Wink   :

1- How's the congress situation?

2-How bad is the economy? Is it 2008 RL bad, 1980 bad, or 1992 bad?

3-Who did Dubya beat in the primaries? Is he less gaffe proned or same old Dubya?

1. The 2006 Democratic wave never happened. Republicans hold 238 House seats and 54 Senate seats.

2. The economy is the same as in real life.

3. McCain, Romney, Huckabee and Giuliani (now the Vice Presidential nominee) all declined to run and endorsed Bush, allowing the latter to fairly easily fend off challenges by Ron Paul and Tom Tancredo. And yes, he's still gaffe-prone, though he's improved somewhat in that regard.

Welcome back! It's 7:00 p.m. and polls have just closed in six states:

Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky and South Carolina have been won by Republican George W. Bush.

Vermont, one of the most reliably Democratic states in the Union, has been won by John Kerry.

Virginia is just a bit too close to call at the moment, but it is a reliably Republican state and we fully expect it to be won by Bush tonight.

Former President George W. Bush (R-TX) / Former Mayor Rudy Giuliani (R-NY): 42 Electoral Votes
President John Kerry (D-MA) / Vice President Barack Obama (D-IL): 3 Electoral Votes

It's now 7:30 p.m., and two more states are closing their polls.

Ohio, the state which put John Kerry in the White House four years ago, and which has voted for every winning Presidential candidate since 1960, is still too close to call at the moment.

Neighboring West Virginia, meanwhile, has gone to former President Bush.

It's 7:48 p.m., and we are now able to project that Virginia has been won by the Republican ticket, as it has in every election since 1964.

Former President George W. Bush (R-TX) / Former Mayor Rudy Giuliani (R-NY): 60 Electoral Votes
President John Kerry (D-MA) / Vice President Barack Obama (D-IL): 3 Electoral Votes

It's 8:00 p.m. and a large batch of states are closing their polls.

Alabama, Mississippi, Oklahoma and Tennessee have unsurprisingly been won by George Bush.

The District of Columbia, Illinois, Maryland, and Massachusetts have given their electoral votes to President Kerry.

Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Maine, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania are all still too close to call.

It's now 8:20 p.m. And we project that the state of Missouri has been won by George W. Bush for the third consecutive time.

It's 8:30 p.m. and Arkansas and North Carolina have closed their polls. We project both states for George W. Bush.

It's 8:41 p.m. and we are able to project that Delaware has gone to John Kerry.

It's 9:00 p.m., and several more states are now closing their polls.

Arizona, Kansas, Louisiana, Nebraska, South Dakota, Texas and Wyoming are being projected for Bush at this time.

New York and Rhode Island have been carried by the Democratic ticket.

Colorado, Michigan, Minnesota, New Mexico, and Wisconsin are too close to call. All but Colorado went to John Kerry four years ago, but they are very much in play tonight.

Former President George W. Bush (R-TX) / Former Mayor Rudy Giuliani (R-NY): 195 Electoral Votes
President John Kerry (D-MA) / Vice President Barack Obama (D-IL): 87 Electoral Votes

It's 9:11 p.m. and Connecticut is being projected for John Kerry.

It's 9:27 p.m. and we have a very important prediction to make. Florida's 27 electoral votes have been carried by George W. Bush.

It's 9:32 p.m. and we now project that Bush has won the state of Colorado.

It's 9:58 p.m. and we can now report that the Republican ticket has carried New Hampshire. This is the first Kerry state to officially flip to Bush tonight, and brings Bush to 235 electoral votes -- just 35 short of victory. Five more states are closing at the top of the hour, including the important swing states of Iowa and Nevada, so don't go anywhere. We'll be right back.

Former President George W. Bush (R-TX) / Former Mayor Rudy Giuliani (R-NY): 235 Electoral Votes
President John Kerry (D-MA) / Vice President Barack Obama (D-IL): 94 Electoral Votes

It's 10:00 p.m., and we can now report that the Republican ticket has carried Montana, North Dakota, and Utah.

Iowa and Nevada are too close to call at this time, but based on our exit polling we expect both states to break for Bush.

It's 10:16 p.m. and we have a huge call to make. We project that the all-important swing state of Ohio has swung to the right tonight. This means that Idaho -- which closes at 11:00 -- will now be enough to put Bush over the top, even if Kerry sweeps the remaining "too close to call" states.

It's 10:29 p.m., and John Kerry has been dealt a blow in his native New England. We are now projecting that Maine's 2nd District has gone Republican for the first time in 20 years.

It's 10:33 p.m., and there's no need to wait until 11:00 to declare Bush the winner: we can now project that the former President has carried New Mexico, which brings him to 272 electoral votes.

It's 10:45 p.m., and President Kerry has conceded the race to George W. Bush, fifteen minutes before the polls close on the West Coast. Repeat: President Kerry has conceded; George Bush has recaptured the White House!

It's 11:00 p.m., and polls are closing on our Pacific coast.

We can report that President-elect Bush has carried Idaho, while California and Hawaii have gone to President Kerry. Oregon and Washington are too close to call.

It's 11:05 p.m. and we now project that Pennsylvania has gone Republican.

It's 11:12 p.m. and we can project that George W. Bush will carry Nevada.

It's 11:31 p.m. and we are now calling Maine for the Bush-Giuliani ticket.

It's 11:39 p.m. and we are now projecting Iowa for the President-elect.

It's 11:50 p.m. and we can now report that President-elect Bush has carried Maine's 1st District.

It is now 11:54 p.m. and we are projecting that George W. Bush has carried the state of Wisconsin.

The time is 12:42 a.m., and we can now call Oregon for the Republican ticket.

It's now 1:00 a.m. Alaska has become the last state to close its polls. Needless to say, President-elect Bush won the state easily.

It's 1:15 a.m., and we have some small consolation for President Kerry: he has narrowly held the state of Michigan.

It's 2:26 a.m. and we can now report that Washington has gone to George Bush.

It's 2:38 a.m. and for those of you still watching, we can now call Minnesota for the President-elect. This breaks the longest-running Democratic voting streak in the nation; until tonight, the state hadn't gone Republican since Richard Nixon's 49-state landslide in 1972. Even Reagan could never manage to carry the state.

It's 4:19 a.m. and we can finally report that New Jersey -- that's New Jersey of all places -- has been won by Bush by a razor-thin margin.

That makes the final electoral tally 368-170 in Bush's favor -- a decisive victory by any standard.

Thank you, and good night.

This is an interesting scenario. How long do you imagine going with this?

I can't imagine Kerry holding Michigan while losing states like Washington, New Jersey, and all of Maine.  MI would flip before any of those.

Especially since the implosion of the automotive industry would've done a lot of damage to a Democratic incumbent President.

Really neat idea for a TL. For Kerry to get blown out so hard, I imagine that this scenario would have to involve more of a genuine economic depression rather than just a recession.

This too.

I don't like the GOP ticket and I'd vote GOP. Why isn't there a conservative VP since W is firmly in the Moderate/Establishment faction (ya know for party unity and such. SoCons won't support Rudy for his pro-choice and pro-gay marriage stances)

As a former President, its likely that in this scenario GWB would be fairly respected by pretty much everyone in the GOP.
