This is a big opening for Phil Scott. Vermont may continue its tradition of back and forth between parties since the 60's.

I wonder if the Progressive Party can seize this opportunity by the reins. (Kidding)

Good riddens. He was a terrible governor, especially recently.

Race is still Likely D though, unless Scott runs.

I'm tentatively calling this a net plus for Democrats.

He's obviously assuming Sanders is going to retire in 2018.

Its actually sounding like he's done with holding office:

Probably good for Democrats: Shumlin is unpopular now and almost lost in November. The Democrats have lot of potential candidates in Vermont, Republicans - essentially one (but - very good). Nevertheless in Presidential year even Scott will have his task  not easy at least...

Good. Maybe now Vermont can get single payer like it was supposed to before he ruined it.

You know that Shumlin only decided against Single Payer because after studies it showed that the state could not afford it right?

I wish progressives understood that you can't wish money out of nowhere.

And that without that money legislature will not vote for it. As far as i see - enough Democrats have strong enough fiscal conservative streak to block it (with Republican help).

Does anyone here know how popular Scott actually is, and whether his performance in lieutenant gubernatorial elections translate to being successful as a gubernatorial candidate?

I agree that he's a terrible governor, but I wouldn't rate it Strong D, even if Scott doesn't run.  Brian Dubie, Randy Brock, or another strong Republican could make it close.

I'm pretty sure Dubie is done with politics. I could be wrong, though. Not sure about Brock.

Both are substantially more conservative then Scott, especially - socially. And Vermont is anything, but socially conservative state. I have severe doubts about their electability...

Odd because countries with single payer spend less of their GDP on health care than the U.S.

My guess is those studies were designed so as to give the governor the out he wanted.

From Yes, Minister:

. Bernard then tells Hacker of Sir Humphrey's talk with Sir Ian the previous evening, and warns him about the "guidelines" that will be laid down for the planning inquiry. Hacker believes all such inquiries to be impartial, but as Bernard remarks, "Railway trains are impartial too, but if you lay down the lines for them that's the way they go."
