Which is really the key question. Who's worse, the person advocating ruthless genocide as a means of enacting a perverted ideology or a person using similar tactics in order to secure political power and achieve (absurd) political goals.

What is a 'key question' and which one is the 'perverted ideology'? Discussing who is worse, Hitler and Stalin, is something pointless to me. In any case the etimology of "genocide" is easily traceable:

Whenever polls like this come around people often like to protest vote for the FF option. Osama bin Laden got almost 40% FF in one poll because of this.

And true to form, that happened again here. Over 20% vote for one of the greatest genocidists in history, all to be "edgy".

Maybe Stalin lasted longer because he was smarter than Hitler. No doubt that Stalin was a criminal, but his motivations were very different. On the other hand, I agree: Hitler's evil was arguably worse due to that genocidal madness. Stalin was evil, but very 'rational' and 'sane'. Racial hatred meant nothing to him.

Stalin wanted to dominate the USSR, but that was about it. Any suggestions that the Stalinist regime was interested in anything other than securing it's borders (which is understandable, given that the Soviet Union was invaded by pretty much every major capitalist country on earth in the late teens) is not borne about by reality. Once Stalin and friends took over the USSR and purged the Left Opposition and the Old Bolsheviks, there wasn't going to be any real push for 'permanent revolution' abroad.

A funny little quirk of historiography is that only now is it beginning to be understood that, far from being the dull bureaucratic monster of repute, he was actually one of the more interesting of the Old Bolsheviks and would have been even had he not so adroitly outmaneuvered the rest of them to obtain absolute power. Not that this reduces the monstrousness, not one bit.
