Within a year of Warren's second inauguration, the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor catapulted the United States into World War II. After two and a half brutal years of fighting in the Pacific and stalemate in Europe, the war appears to be coming to an end, with the forces of Germany and Japan steadily giving ground to the Allied armies. The war has also sparked a period of renewed economic growth in the United States, for which Warren has taken credit, allowing the American Party to win solid majorities in Congress in the 1942 Midterms.

Due to the ongoing war effort, President Warren has decided to break tradition and run for a third term in office. While the foremost goal of the Administration is victory, Warren has stated that the post-war era must see a re-conception of international relations and a continued presence of the United States on the world stage. Running in opposition to this vision are Vice President Robert La Follette, Jr. and Senator Robert Taft, both ardent isolationists.

Warren's popularity has led many prominent Populists, such Senator Harry Truman of Missouri and former President Eleanor Roosevelt of New York, to sit out the 1944 election. Not among these is former Iowa Governor Henry Wallace, who is considered by most to be the front-runner for the Populist nomination. Also in the running are former Senator Alben Barkley of Kentucky, a respected elder statesman who first ascended to national office during the Debs Administration,  and former Governor Paul V. McNutt of Indiana, who's skills as a politician rival Huey Long's.

Once again, the Democrats are suffering from a lack of prominent candidates in spite of their relatively strong performance in the last election. The front runner for the nomination is Senator Harry Byrd of Virginia, who has vocally opposed Warren's economic policy and his continuation of the Sinclair Civil Rights program. Byrd is opposed by State Representative Strom Thurmond of South Carolina, who most consider a token candidate with no real chance of winning.

Have at it!

Voted for Barkley here, since under normal circumstances, he'd be my vote.

In a case like this, right here and now however, Warren needs that third term. So I vote instead to get a noble opposition who will be good to vote for in 1948.

Depressing to see the internationalist hegemony remaining in full force. Wouldn't it be fun to switch things up and vote for an isolationist to get an extremely altered international scenario?

Barkley for fun. I'll probably vote Warren in the general election though.

The general election will be Warren vs. Wallace vs. Byrd.
