Serious question.

Both basically got the US involved in stale-mates in Asian countries to prevent the spread of Communism. One is glorified as a national hero even now, the other is despised as a war-monger, despite his stunning domestic achievements.

Simple: Truman never pulled down his pants and waved his Nixon at the press when answering why he U.S. is getting involved. Johnson did.

The Korean War is normally viewed as more justified and less nasty than vietnam.

Mainly because Truman and Eisenhower had a much better grasp of the kind of war we were fighting. There can't be total victory in a proxy war with another superpower. The best possible end-game in Vietnam was the same thing - two countries, firmly divided, each backed by one superpower.

Because I'm sure a land invasion of Japan would have gone so well...

Yeah.  The counterfactuals did not look good for Hiroshima/Nagasaki.

That is why when Truman left office, the war was locked in a stalemate and Truman left office with approval ratings on par with Nixon's during the height of Watergate?

The Gulf of Tonkin incident was fabricated, and used as a pretext for intervention in Nam by LBJ.

There was no hippie counterculture during Truman's presidency.
