Goldwater certainly wasnt the most conservative. He hated the religious right, and called himself the new liberal of the republican party. H He probably was to the left of Bill Clinton in economic policies and the thing is he wasnt an extremist like LBJ made him as LBJ probably did worse things then Goldwater would have done(ngoldwater wouldnt have nuked vietnam) . He also didnt support segregation(Goldwater voted for the 1957 civil rights bill). Goldwater was also one of the reasons nixon resigned becuase he was an honarable man who cared about principles first , and was not a sell out to the elites which most republicans are today.

basically he wasnt an extremist , LBJ smear campaign made him look like one

I'm going to go off of what I think their personal ideologies are/were rather than the campaign they ran, because the only campaigns I really remember vividly are 2004, 2008 and 2012.
