She had a troubled family life growing up and appears to have culturally identified more with her mostly black classmates and adopted black siblings rather than her oppressive parents. She is the new adopted mother of her younger brother, who courts liberated from the parents. This sounds like a complicated situation that has given her some issues, I don't really have enough of a clue to make a value judgement here.

I saw this on Gawker and the reaction was even more hilarious. As for me I get why (some) African Americans may have problem with this, but honestly it's a hilarious history. One fact I loved was that the local African Americans in Spokane did suspect that she wasn't Black, more because of her views (she was simply too generic angry African American activists)and her tales about her personal history, than because of how she looked. But no one wanted to ask her if she was Black, in case she just was a light skinned African American, plus they was all happy with her work in NAACP.

I've been laughing about this story for two days now.

From what I understand, she's falsified her race on several legal documents, her parents don't back her up (as they are completely white), she's made up an elaborate fictional life, she's doing major cultural appropriation, and she may or may not have made up the death threats she's been getting.

So I have no sympathy for this lady. I have more sympathy for ethnic minorities who attempt to pass as white, since at least they have an excuse that white people have privileges that they don't have. This lady though is just appropriating a slice of black culture for her own whims.

Dolezal once told a Hispanic student that she "didn't look Hispanic enough" to truly understand what it feels like to be discriminated against.


To the posters saying "What's the big deal, she still was helping black people", I think the problem people have is that she actively lied and hid her past. Claiming various black people in pictures are her relatives, talking about growing up as a black child, putting "African-American" on job applications, stuff like that.

Presumably she hid her past because of bad blood with her parents.  This is why she felt adopted by her black friends and their families and identified with them...and also why she legally adopted her brother.

The amount of ignorant finger waving here is pretty sad.
