From what I know, Reagan in the early 50s was still pretty liberal. His "conversion" happened in the  following decades.

Agreed.  Reagan's political views changed after his acting career was mostly over and in 1954 he took a job to host "General Electric Theater."  A lot of the topics he spoke about in that role led to him to re-think his views on several topics mostly dealing with economic policy.

I remember reading about Nixon's race against Douglas in 1950 where people thought Reagan was too liberal to stump for Douglas.

He didn't become a Republican till the 60's, but I believe he endorsed the Eisenhower/Nixon ticket both times.

Did LA County lean more Republican at the time?

Yes. And many of its Democrats were pretty conservative (think Sam Yorty types).

I believe the House seat in question had been Douglas's also.

I wonder what was going through their minds in 1980 when Reagan crushed Carter.

Assuming any were alive, they were probably rather old fashioned.

This article has made me realize something ... it seems that the breakout of the Cold War is what really gave steam to the idea that Southern Democrats - always fiercely patriotic and traditional - were somehow also "conservative" in nature, as we began to politicize being hard on or soft against Russia.
