By Long Island I mean Nassau and Suffolk counties, exclusive of Brooklyn and Queens.

Orange County obviously since it has far more of a distinct cultural identity than LI.

Honestly, regardless of politics both would be decent places to live (albeit overpriced). Lean LI.

A friend of mine is looking for housing in Long Island (she's going to med school out there) and all the advice she's been getting from locals is SUPER RACIST.  Not openly, of course, but they sure know the art of code words out there.

With that freshly in my mind... eh, still can't pull the lever for OC, I doubt it's actually better out there.

Long Island mostly because I generally prefer the Northeast by default.

Long Island, even though it's pretty bad. Orange County is California, and California is terrible.

I lived in Suffolk for a few months in grad school in the 80's and visited there frequently over a 10 year span before and after my residence. Housing wasn't an issue for me and I found plenty of eateries and entertainment to keep me occupied when I wasn't working. It wa easy to take the train to NYC for weekends. I can't say how it is today, 30 years later.

Probably more built up and the highways are likely far more congested in the western parts.

I'd probably like either one, but I'd have to go with Orange County on this one.

If you were asking about Orange County, FL, then that's different.

LI (assuming that means Suffolk and Nassau counties) does not do anything for me. It's flat, and most of it is suburban sprawl.

That's Orange County if you subtract Disneyland.

But Irvine more than nullifies any pluses that place offers...somehow.

South and east Orange County are quite hilly.

The one in CA. Wink

I've been advised by three different people from that area that I would love living there. I probably would. Weather, culture, politics, etc.

Orange County.

Nice weather, beaches, Disney Land, family friendly, right-leaning, etc.

This deserves a bump, given the vastly different November swings in these counties.

That presumes that one answers based on the politics of the regions in the polls. I find that to be one of the last reasons I would select an area. Cost of living, employment, transportation, housing, cultural amenities, education, and climate all rank higher.

Since I'm not BRTD, this has no effect on how I view a place.

Still Orange, CA easily.
