Nienstedt was probably the top backer for the 2012 failed anti-gay marriage amendment and the media was picking up stories about how he was driving people out of the church left and right. But obviously his mishandling of sexual abuser priests which just resulted in the archdiocese being formally charged by the Ramsey County prosecutor and earlier having to go through bankruptcy earlier this year after paying off tons of settlements to victims was an even bigger issue and the reason he's going now.
I doubt this will do too much to help improve the absolutely crumbling state of the Catholic church in the Twin Cities though.
