I've never understood the relative merits of a mileage tax, to be honest. That said, if the politics surrounding raising a mileage tax over time are friendlier - and they can't possibly be much worse - that alone might be enough to persuade me.
If electric vehicles ever take off as more than a niche, it may well be necessary to change how roads are funded.

May as well start planning for flying cars and jetpacks, too, in that case.

If that happens, we won't need as much highway funding anyway.

It would be appropriate to tax electricity used in electric vehicles as a fuel tax. Such would require that electric vehicles be so designed that one could not power them with household current except through some meter that assesses such a tax.

It would be appropriate to tax electricity used in electric vehicles as a fuel tax. Such would require that electric vehicles be so designed that one could not power them with household current except through some meter that assesses such a tax.   

Which would be a good way to discourage use of electric vehicles if you wanted to do that.

isn't the main stress placed upon roads by heavy duty vehicles like lorries rather than family automobiles?
