Donald Trump may be a joke candidate but he could do some damage in the debates. He is no wilting flower and he is best when he is on the attack.  So who will take the brunt of the attacks in the debates? Who is going to get fired by Trump?

Probably Paul, though I can see arguments for Bush, Rubio, or Cruz.

Jeb Bush.

Yet:

Jeb Bush > Donald Trump
Cut taxes by $18 billion as Florida Governor > proposed a 14.25% wealth tax above $10 million
Increased reserves in Florida > Filed for bankruptcy 4 times
With a partner, started his own company that expanded > drove down a professional sports league
For free markets > for protective tariffs, benefactor of corporate welfare
Enacted medical liability reform in Florida > supported universal health care
Florida ranked #2 in job growth during his tenure, his business created jobs > He's cost thousands jobs
Always pro-life > flip-flopped on abortion
Has campaigned for Republicans including George Bush, George W. Bush, Rick Scott, and Marco Rubio > Donated money to Hillary Clinton
Private sector & government experience > No government experience, relied on bailouts to be successful in the private sector

He attacks Jeb the most in his speeches, though I'm not sure if that's due to personal antipathy or his supposed "frontrunner" status.

The bigger question is: will Trump even bother to memorize the names and titles of everyone on the stage?

It wouldn't surprise me if he just refers to a few them as buddy or loser.

He'll carefully decide who he wants to fire first.

If I were Trump's campaign consultant, I'd encourage him to use the debates to pump his own resume of a guy doing BIG things as much as possible.  I'd avoid personal attacks, because that would invite the kind of back and forth baiting over issue stances ("In 1999, you were for Canadian-style Healthcare!") that have little or nothiing to do with what kind of President Trump, or anyone else, would actually be.

What I DO believe is that Trump has hit on something; the "Let's Make America Great Again!" theme.  It's a traditional GOP theme that the current crop of GOP candidates really can't pull off because they don't have the persona of a Reagan, nor do they have histories of doing BIG things that inspire hope for greatness.  And part of the American Decline is our crumbling infrastructure.  So here comes Donald Trump, a guy who builds big things, versus a bunch of dweebs who haven't done much with their lives other than play politics (for the most part) whose idea of progress is to gridlock Congress and shut down the government.

I believe that the contrast Trump could pose versus the rest of the unimpressive GOP field could project him into contender status and keep him in the race long enough to where he's (A) gain in the polls vs. Hillary as to gain the "electabilty" tag, and (B) get Republicans focused on the kind of National Renewal issues in a way where he gains traction as the new Reagan.  It's also possible that Trump could implode as everyone gangs up on him, or as he makes a fatal gaffe, but that's not a certainty.  Trump's no Herman Cain.  I consider him a legitimate contender for the GOP nomination, and he may well get it.

Yeah I guess you are right, because since 1988, we've only lost once with a Bush.

I guess we should nominate a terrorist-appeasing, pot smoking, criminal loving eye doctor from Kentucky instead......

My most fervent hope for the debate is that he is placed next to Chris Christie. They're both aggressive, confrontational guys with hair-trigger tempers. There is such a potential for a good old-fashioned "F**k me? No, f**k you!" New York showdown. Maybe they could exchange blows on the stage.

In his campaign so far Trump has gone after Bush the most. While this is certainly mainly due to him being a 'frontrunner' I also think there is some personal beef too. He also has been taking a good number of shots at one of the other frontrunners,  Rubio, but not Walker. I think that is because Walker has shown him a level of respect, apparently visiting him and giving him a present recently.

And with Regards to Rubio, I suspect that Bush and Walker and others are happy that Trump is now in the ring. Not only is Rubio now polling at the top of the average, he has the highest favorability ratings and very low negative ratings. He is essentially an empty vessel that people put their own hopes into (ala Obama). For Bush or Walker to go after Rubio it would probably backfire, so they must be happy that finally someone is taking Marco out for a spin.

Will Trump even behave in the debates?  The moderator will say that he has 90 seconds to give his answer…will Trump abide by that, or just keep talking?  Will he be able to put up with being on stage with 9 other people, and only being able to talk for 10% of the time?

Trump will go after Jeb and Walker. Hit on same themes as Perot and Sanders. Pernament trade relations with China, unfair practices.

Jeb. He has started already, really. The anti-Hispanic rant is a not-so-veiled attack on Jeb.

Then, again, given the sort of hearing Trump´s rant got in Spanish-language media (oh, it was all over it - letters to the editor columns had to add space to accomodate the enraged readers), whomever he attacks most will likely get a bump among the 3 non-Cuban Hispanic Republicans out there.

I believe it's the polls in a couple months time (or maybe later) that count, not the polls now.  We'll see where Trump is standing then.

Jeb of course.

Honestly confused as to why people are thinking he would bother going after Paul.

The first debate is August 6th.  Fox says they'll use the five most recent national polls, but the thinking is that they probably won't count internet or robo-pollsters.  Given that, "the five most recent national polls" will probably include polls that begin by mid-July or so.  So the polls that "count" towards scoring an invitation are probably going to start coming up within 3 weeks.
