His presidency was awful, aside from the upside of annoying Clay. Texas Annexation was a terrible idea, that needlessly inflamed tension. He was also inept and incompetent to boot.

And of course, he literally was a traitor and endorsed the slaveowner's rebellion.

One of the more underrated Presidents. Foreign policy with Britain and China was a huge success. Correctly blocked tariff increases and helped finally pull the US out of the Panic of 1837. His policy to annex Texas was a bit dangerous, but he succeeding in doing so. With a record of great foreign policy achievements, domestic achievements, and increasing the size of the country, most historians would rank him highly, but he committed the sin of not toeing a party line or cooperating with a Congress (that had bad policies!). Four stars.

Even if you ignore his treason and focus solely on his presidency, he was a complete tool of the slave power, and annexing Texas helped cause both the Mexican American war and, by expanding slavery further, eventually the Civil War.

The traitor rap was long after his presidency, so I don't think that should count. His presidency was largely a nothing. Two stars.

He annexed Texas, which was a plus, and his actions led to America taking over Mexico's northern lands, another plus.

On the other hand, he was a tool to slave power and later endorsed the Confederacy, so it's a 3/5 in balance.

Probably the worst president up to that point.

I can't believe this forum still has some people who appear to take muh expansionism and muh manifest destiny seriously enough to not give Tyler one star.
