well changes in money is not something they do quickly. The $10 was already set to be redesigned and 2020 (the planned release year) is the anniversary of the 19th amendment, so it worked out for the 10 to be the first with a woman.

Maybe as the new generation of money comes out they will replace others on the other bills. But I doubt they will touch Washington or Lincoln and every loves their 'Benjamins.' But Grant and Jackson? Neither is untouchable. Maybe one of them will also be replaced with a woman as well?

Here is a WTF from the Treasury FAQ

So when a woman finally makes her way onto the money she has to share it with a man? Really?

Maybe if they make Hamilton some kind of small watermark, but anything less than having a woman be the featured portrait on all the notes would send a very bad message.

Treasury announced they were working on a new generation of currency back in 2013. The new bills would have new anti counterfeiting features and be the first bills with tactile features for the blind. The $10 was set to be the first.  I suspect for the people at Treasury, the choice of portrait is a relatively low priority feature from their goal to improve the currency.

The woman on $20 campaign on social media was either unaware of the plans or chose to ignore it based on Jackson being a particularly easy target for replacement. Perhaps they succeeded in getting Treasury to put a woman on the next bill due for redesign (the $10), but it appears a Twitter meme isnt enough to completely upend the glacial plans and bureaucracy of the Treasury Dept.

One likely factor for the $10 being the first of the new generation of currency is there are relatively fewer bills in circulation. There are 8.1B $20 bills in circulation, but only 1.9B $10 bills.

The $100 bill is the most widely circulated bill in the world - by a large margin.  About 80% of the bills in circulation are $100 bills

Actually the $1 bill is most common with 11B in circulation. $100 bill is second with 10B bills.

$100 bills do account for 78% of the value of currency in circulation, but not in number of bills for obvious reasons.

A woman on the 20 is certainly a better move than the 10. Hopefully the bureaucracy of the Treasury Dept. can move the $20 ahead of the $10 to become the first new bill with the new anti-counterfeit features. That is really the focus of Treasury, not who is on the bill.   If there is no way to stop the $10 redesign process, then they need to announce and show the new $20 design with a woman on it before the new $10 (with Hamilton) comes out.

I am bringing this back from the dead for an update.  Hamilton is saved (by a musical), and Jackson is out (but not until 2030)

Well as I noted months ago in this thread, the process for changing currency is very slow and the schedule was laid out long ago.  The $10 was set to be next and the $20 wasn't set for a while. The whole woman on the $20 movement didn't seem to be aware of this and so while it can be argued they succeeded in getting a woman on the $20, Treasury isn't going to change their schedule or rush out a new $20 because of a hashtag campaign.
