Technically, it hasn't flown over the State House in decades. It is flying on the grounds at a Confederate soldier memorial, where it was put as part of the compromise to bring it down from the dome. I don't see that changing anytime soon. At best, I could see fiddling with the memorial a second time to add an equal-sized statue of an USCT and a 35 star Union flag.

As I was driving to work today, I came across a sudden moment of self realization that has haunted me for hours.

I have blood on my hands tonight. I once helped to enable and foster this culture of hate that is a cancer on the heart of America. Every time I defended a Confederate war memorial, or a flag flying over a state house, I helped to contribute to this climate of hate. Every time I posted “it’s ok to be proud to be white” in response to civil rights issues, as I often did circa 2011, I contributed to the climate of hate. Every time I expressed opposition to say, gay marriage, I contributed to the fact that it has taken this long for marriage equality to be implemented. Every time I defended Rhodesia (and this admission should not be taken as an endorsement of Mugabe or his regime), I ultimately was defending the right of a minority to oppress a majority based solely on race. See a pattern? White nationalists are a strange bunch. They think they are bigger in numbers than they actually are. When they aren’t engaged in a hateful circle jerk at Stormfront, they are out actively spreading their loathsome message in simpler, more docile, and worst of all, seemingly acceptable ways. By spreading my bile like I did in 2011, I encouraged this and promoted this. And tonight, for the first time, I truly realized just how wrong I was. I can’t just dismiss this as a “phase” as I so often have done. It was worst than just a “phase.”

I was wrong. I was vile. And I have blood on my hands tonight. I may have not fired the gun, but there is simply no excuse for my thoughts and actions. While I have strived to heal myself from this dark period of my life, this atrocity, this terrorist attack that has struck America to the core, should not be glossed over as another gun tragedy, nor should it be an issue solely about gun violence. It is an issue about America’s conscience, and transcends the simplistic left/right boundaries.

Part of me wishes that he had killed himself before he was caught so that we don't have to witness the imminent popularization of the shooter by the media.

The press will not publicize drunks running onto a football/baseball field because they know it will only encourage copycats.

Yet the press engages in pornographic coverage of the worst offenders in the nation each opportunity they get. Some of these guys have pre-recorded messages and statements in case they don't make it out alive to give the interviews themselves.

So we have a press that knows what they are doing by putting out this overexposure, and we have the perpetrators who know that they will receive the overexposure.

Nobody expects/wants politicians to pass laws restricting free speech so it is up to the public to demand better of our free press.

Yes, in some vague, esoteric way all White people are responsible for what happened in South Carolina.

This incident in many ways combines two incidents that keep playing out in a repeated cycle; aggressive racism and multiple shooting events. But it won't change a thing.

It definitely needs to amended. People hold the founders up on a pedestal despite their belief that black people do not deserve freedom, and women do not deserve equality, and all of their other radical beliefs, including their beliefs on guns.

Gun ownership should not be a right. It should be a privilege. They should only be accessible to those who are responsible and non-violent. Any crime should preclude one from gun ownership. President Obama summed it up perfectly when he said (paraphrasing), "We need to reckon with the fact that this type of mass violence does not happen in other advanced nations." This just doesn't happen on this scale in other countries as advanced as the U.S. It's time to stop this nonsense. We need to reinstate the Assault Weapons Ban, invest in smart gun technology, institute strong background checks, mental health exams, and caps on magazines.

I'm really tired of the conservative media (read: Fox News) turning these tragedies into talking points. People are dying, and there playing political football with it.

RIP to all of the victims. I hope someday this country can realize attacks like this are terrorism and act accordingly.
