Likely candidates? Who do you think would enter and win, both primary and general? Any LG ideas?

Schneiderman will be the next governor. Who cares about the GOP nominee?

Chris Gibson is certainly interested. We'll see if that translate into an actual election or not.

If Rep. Gibson runs I would hardly say "who cares." New York could certainly have a moderate Republican get elected Governor. Maryland is a testament to that.

It's possiible, but very difficult. NYC usually gives too much advantage to Democratic candidate. Much more then even in Pataki's time...

If Cuomo runs again and Gibson runs as expected, then we'll have an interesting race on our hands. Otherwise, it could still be somewhat competitive but with the Democrat favored (it is NY after all).

The only GOP chance is if Cuomo runs again, similar to '94 ("ABC"...anyone but Cuomo).  Any other Democrat, no matter how much baggage they have, will win without a problem.  The GOP bench in NY is beyond pathetic now.

Statewide bench. Gibson is fine enough and moderate enough, but he is one of 27 House members from New York, and not especially known to most people of the state, for example... And NYC votes Democratic almost reflexively now. At least - if Republican candidate is not called Michael Bloomberg...

No Republican has been elected to statewide office in New York since Pataki in 2002.

I supported Golisano in that election. He did quite well upstate.

May be. But Gibson, while generally very moderate by present day Republican standards, is pro-life. For NY candidate it's rather a minus...

correct me if i'm wrong but he voted against the 20 week ban in 2013. That has to count for something.

I looked here:

http://www.capwiz.com/nrlc/scorecard.xc?chamber=H&state=US&session=113&x=11&y=17

and seems he voted "for". It was Hanna, who voted "against"... But Hanna, obviously, will NOT run for Governor (and, in general, he is more "old school" - rather solidly conservative on economy, but very moderate on "pure social" issues..) - he has his hands full in House with right-wingers repeatedly trying to oust him in primary..

Possibly DeBlasio if he wins in 2017. Dunno, I am not up on my NY Politics, just their scandals.

deBlasio would not win a statewide race.  He has middling approvals in the city and is hated by those in the suburbs and Upstate.  Upstaters are particularly unlikely to vote for a New York City mayor for anything statewide.

Giuliani was polling strong in 2000, they are radically different, but again his love lies as a moderate Republican not a Progressive Democrat.

Never say never in a state as Democratic as New York.  The last New York City mayor elected governor was John Hoffman in 1869.

De Blasio might run.

However, I'm sure Cuomo will attempt to win a third term, but face a very though primary challange.
