After two failed presidential runs in 1940 and 1944, Ohio Senator Robert Taft upset Secretary of State George Marshall at the 1948 American Party National Convention, becoming his party's first post-war presidential nominee. With fellow conservative Arthur Vandenberg as his running mate, Taft has proposed a foreign policy that is both isolationist and anti-Communist, while calling for an end to economic controls at home. His opponent is former President Eleanor Roosevelt, a self-described internationalist who managed to shake off the stigma of Huey Long to win the Populist nomination. Her running mate is fellow internationalist Harry Truman of Missouri, who was among the most vocal supporters of the League of Nations in the Senate. Thus, the Election of 1948 is slated to be a battle over foreign policy as the nation determines what stance to take in the Cold War.

Much as I loathe internationalism, I loathe those against economic controls even more.

So Roosevelt I guess?

Still disappointed in the lack of Barkley though, he'd be a much more kick-butt Veep than Truman.

Depressing. I abstain as I can not vote for the anti-Long and internationalist Roosevelt or the anti-union Taft in good conscience.

1948 Presidential Election

Fmr. President Eleanor Roosevelt (People's-New York)/ Senator Harry S. Truman (People's-Missouri): 523 Electoral Votes; 64.3% popular votes
Senator Robert Taft (American-Ohio)/ Senator Arthur Vandenberg (American-Michigan): 8 Electoral Votes; 35.7% popular votes

In an unprecedented landslide, former President Eleanor Roosevelt swept both the electoral college and the popular vote in the Election of 1948, carrying 46 of the 48 states against her opponent, Ohio Senator Robert Taft. Roosevelt's victory, in keeping with opposition victories throughout the Western world in the post-war era, would be attributed by bemused observers to heavy crossover by moderate American Party voters, who disliked Taft's isolationism and combative personality.
