If African American leaders want the flag down, than take it down. Why antagonize people? I used to be one of those "muh flag" people until the events in Charleston, but for the first time, I am finally realizing just how negative an effect the flag is having. Take the damn thing down!

I watched a clip from Jon Stewart's show last night (I just can't find the time to watch it when it comes on anymore), and he's talking about how African Americans in Charleston (not just there of course, but in all of the South) drive down roads named after Confederate generals and how they have a statehouse which bears the Confederate flag. Take it down IMO. Not even a question.

It has no place being displayed on government property.  Also, Confederate memorials should not be receiving state or federal government funds.   Legit two-sided Civil War museums/historical reenactments are OK, but that is it.

Look, its one thing for people to fly the confederate flag themselves.  Its not something I approve of, but people obviously should have the freedom to express themselves.

But having the flag flying in the capitol building is a completely different situation.  This isn't personal speech, this is the official position of the state government.  It needlessly alienates a large segment of the population with a symbol of a time when their ancestors were enslaved.  Its needlessly divisive and hurtful.

And why is it up there?  To express Southern Culture, apparently.  People who are proud of their southern culture have multiple ways to express themselves without having the government officially endorse their position.  Removing that flag is no imposition on anybody.

The state flag of S. Carolina? Should be at half-staff.

There is no legitimate reason why a state capitol needs to be allowed or ought to be allowed to fly a symbol of racism and treachery.

So you advocate some kind of a law banning such a flag? Exactly how would you word that law?

Sadly the state can't take it down legally without each house of the legislature approving the removal of it by a 3/4s vote.

To fly it at half mast might be seen as endowing it with contemporary legitimacy in a way it doesn't deserve.

I didn't say that.

Any chance of a special session?

This is the flag of South Carolina:

It is at half staff, right under the U.S. flag, but the Confederate flag is not at half staff.

Then that is the only flag that should be at half mast.

To make it obligatory for SC schoolchildren to pledge allegiance to it?

Why does it need such a large supermajority?

It doesn't.  It only needs a 2/3 vote in each house.  Basically, the supermajority requirement was to ensure that the compromise that brought the flag down from the dome would also take the issue off the legislative agenda for the foreseeable future.

A South Carolina Republican State Senator has stated he will introduce a bill in December to remove the Confederate flag from the capitol.

Are military unit flags or other non-official types of flags supposed to be lowered to half mast under flag etiquette?

Because state flags and the national flag are the only flags flown at half mast.
