Italian for ancestral reasons.

I took Spanish in High School and really didn't care for it, though I'll probably have to brush up on it eventually.

I studied French in high school and Spanish in college. I'd like to brush up on my Spanish (that sounds absurd coming from someone who lives in a county that's like one-third Hispanic, but if you're a white person, you are spoken to in English even if you try to speak to them in Spanish.)

As far as languages I haven't been exposed to, I'd probably choose Portuguese. I love the way Italian sounds but it just isn't an especially useful language to know.

I've learned Spanish already (and am somewhat close to fluency) and have spent time in both South America and Spain, but that's it as far as foreign languages go.

In terms of most useful languages for an American, I would say:
1. Spanish
2. Chinese
3. German
4. Arabic
5. Latin (for improving one's English vocabulary/verbal/logic skills)

As far as Romance languages go, I think it's Spanish hands down.

French.  It sounds so smooth and elegant, and maybe I could use that to win over some ladies.

Presumably most of the people with whom I'll have the need to communicate at some point or another in my life will know English anyway. And Latin is a beautiful and fascinating language which is the ancestor to two of the three languages I speak, so I could learn a lot from it etymologically.

Maybe the knowledge of Latin would be helpful on his scholary path? Or maybe he just wants to have fun with the language. It's not like he's limited to learning just one foreign language.

I actually learn Esperanto now. You're probably going to "mega-facepalm" on me, but I needed a new hobby and I have a great time with it, so I don't care.

I'm currently in Paris, and I'd very much like to reaffirm my choice of French.  Beautiful language, and here on my second visit to Paris, I'm realizing it might be my favorite city on Earth; I'd love to be able to communicate fluently.

I'm glad to see you're enjoying this city Cheesy.

To be honest, I like my capital too. But I couldn't live her indefinitely.

Oh, I love it!  It's literally amazing.  I could see why you might not want to live there, but as a visitor it's heaven.

Especially as a visitor who loves wine!

P.S.  If any of our French avatars live in Paris and have seen a blonde-haired guy wearing a US soccer jersey (today) or a Germany soccer jersey (yesterday), it might have been me! Wink

I'll be back there in a couple days. If you're interested, we can meet up, although tbh I don't know you at all on this forum.

Haha, hey I'd be down for that!, but unfortunately we fly to Edinburgh on Saturday morning.  But feel lucky you live there, it's a truly unique city as far as the rest of the world is concerned.  It BAFFLES me that there's a perception out there that the French are rude.  The people have gone out of their way to be so nice and helpful.
