No not legalisation, although I support its decriminalization and perhaps a restricted medicinal gay marriage policy. (moderate)

Absolutely not. It strips away an excuse for a gay not to  get married to his regular bed partner. "Yes, darling, you know how much I want to marry you, as a public affirmation and legal commitment of our love, and be with you forever, but alas it is simply not legal." Oh, the horror, the horror!

Odd this massively persuasive argument has never been used regarding SSM. Pathetic bunch the opponents of SSM are really. I would never hire them as my lawyer.

Did people who 'support state's right' also oppose the DOMA in 1996?

Sunrise, I hope you know that I just found it fun to tease you for the Jesse Helms love which came as a big surprise to me, combine that with your Israel support and you were just too big of a target to ignore for me Tongue

I promise I'll stop!

Haha yeah, next Tuesday's decision will be coupled by many an awkward conversation in gay households across the United States.

I support the recognition of it by the state since it is only fair for the state to recognize all unions as benefits are involved. Also that recognition may allow someone to achieve a somewhat higher degree of happiness and therefore it is something to be encouraged. There is no real negative to legalizing it. I suppose one could say it endorses something one may consider wrong, but it isn't like the lack of legalization is going to stop or reduce it and no one is harmed by it so there is no valid reason to disallow it.

One socially conservative argument in favor of it actually is that it encourages the promise of monogamy. Also if you disapprove of it, it isn't like you as an individual have to give recognition of such a union. I am not really fond of it on a personal level, but legally I see no reason to oppose it, especially since the positives outweigh any supposed negative.

Yes, even though I don't like the way a lot of this has played out.

I'd like to see a decision that says that a gay marriage from one state must be recognized in another state, but not that every state has to perform them.  That is that there's no constitutional right for same-sex marriage in itself, but that there is a right to have one's legally entered into marriages recognized and that this would include same sex marriage.  Couples will be able to get married in another state, but maybe there leaves some room for the political process to come to terms with this in the remaining states that don't perform them.  Proponents can then listen to the concerns of opponents in order to reach legislative language to bring enough of them along. Eventually the Court may say the rest of the states have to go along. I believe that political process is important in settling such an issue as this, but ever since it became clear the Court would rule for it, this has been avoided in favor of a more unrelentingly antagonistic and uncompromising approach.

But then it's not up to me, so I just hope somehow there can be some sort of peace made between the existence of gay marriage and the freedom of those who oppose it.  One thing I'm sure of is that the Court's decision will not settle the issue for society.
