What's the map look like? Is there a Federal Reserve? Does the income tax stay low? Do we remain neutral in World War I, or does Roosevelt drive us straight into the conflict?

He wins, and may God have mercy on our souls.

Why do you say that?

Roosevelt had gone off his rocker while in Africa, and was far more of a nut than Wilson was.

Popular Election of Judges...
War with Germany several years earlier...
Probably even more socialistic craziness...

Wilson was bad, true...but I can't see how Roosevelt could have been better.

Although without the split in the Republicans, Congress probably would have been more Republican and could have served as a check in Roosevelt...although probably not.

He wins.
He would have put the US into the War earlier.
Question who would he have faced in 1916?

1916, eh.

Oscar Underwood was the Conservative Southerner. He would have been the Democratic Nominee.

Republicans would have either:

A. Endorsed TR in 1916.

B. Run an arch-Conservative like TR's former Veep Charles Fairbanks or Illionis Governor Frank Logan.

He would have been a far stronger leader than Wilson. His foreign policy was excellent (no "peace without victory"). And he didn't go "crazy"- that's what the GOP said at the time to discredit him.

He would have won, BTW.

If he supported unprovoked war with Germany, and electing judges by popular vote, he was truly nuts.

BTW, did Taft and TR ever get along again after that election?

Yes, they reconciliated and became good friends again before TR died.

He would have declared war on Germany in 1915 after the Lusitania, and then run for reelection in '16 with the horses-in-midstream argument. The war would end by 1917 at the latest, and history will never be the same. If we're really lucky and smart, there might not be a WW2 (i.e., Kerenskyite Russia, Germany allowed to annex Austria and Sudetenland and not overburdened with ridiculous indemnities, no Depression).
