Do we know where primary state filing deadlines tend to be clustered? How late can a candidate feasibly enter and still compete in the primaries?

IIRC, the first ballot filing deadlines start coming up in October, but I'd have to look it up.

Any idea where you'd look? The GA SoS site is useless, and I haven't seen anything on Frontloading HQ, the Green Papers, or Ballotpedia.

When there were rumors of Christie entering in 2011, the deadline was somewhere around October, iirc. It could be later due to the later primary calendar.

I'm starting to research into this for you guys.  I will update this post when I find a date for a state.

Arkansas:  November 9th, 2015

Louisiana:  December 4th, 2015

It depends if IA and NH move their caucus/primary even earlier than what is now projected.

But the earliest deadlines are in late October for these states (based on 2012 data from the FEC).

If IA and NH are in February, then the first filing deadlines might come up in November.

I found this list of ballot access deadlines from the 2012 cycle:

The primary calendar is starting a few weeks later this time, so not sure how that will impact things.

Alabama is November 6, which is so far the state with the earliest filing deadline for both parties.

And because AL is also a Super Tuesday state (March 1), it's unlikely that any candidate will declare their candidacy after October.

Petitions for president and delegates begin circulation on Oct 8 in IL. They must be filed between Jan 4 and Jan 6, 2016 for the Mar 15 primary. Petitions for president (beauty contest) require 3000 valid signatures. Petitions for delegates by congressional district require 500 valid signatures for Dems and 0.5% of the qualified primary electors for Pubs which varies from 179 in IL-7 to 1014 in IL-18. The time to identify delegates slates and collect the signatures in all CDs is not trivial, so no one is going to be able to start in late December and expect to get on by Jan 6.
