'2008 Redux?' Political Analysts Ask After Hillary Clinton's Third Place Finish in Iowa

Hillary Clinton's astonishing third place finish in Monday's Iowa Caucus has drawn inevitable comparisons to her performance here in 2008, when she also came in third place behind eventual nominee Barack Obama and former North Carolina Senator John Edwards. This time around, it was former Maryland Governor Martin O'Malley who surged from behind to claim the mantle of victor. Former Governor O'Malley won some 34% of the vote here, with Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders receiving 33%. Clinton got 31%. This is a devastating blow to former Secretary Clinton's status as the frontrunner. Now, one thing is certain: there will be no Clinton coronation this year.

O'Malley was ecstatic as he addressed his followers regarding his victory. "The American people have spoken loud and clear here today. They have declared that they are not interested in some coronation; they have declared that the Presidency is not some crown to be passed back and forth between two royal families; they have declared that they want a true progressive voice, someone who will fight for working families, for the rights of LGBT Americans, for the rights of our hard-working neighbors who have immigrated to this country, our beloved country, in search of a better life; and, lastly, they have declared that Martin O'Malley is that voice. Thank you. God bless Iowa and the United States of America!"

Almost as unexpected were the results on the Republican side, where Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal won with less than 20% of the vote against a field of 13 Republican candidates.

Iowa Democratic Caucus
Martin O'Malley: 33.8%
Bernie Sanders: 33.1%
Hillary Clinton: 30.5%
Lincoln Chafee: 2.1%
Other: 0.5%

Iowa Republican Caucus
Bobby Jindal: 19.8%
Scott Walker: 16.4%
Donald Trump: 12.9%
Marco Rubio: 11.7%
Rand Paul: 9.9%
Jeb Bush: 7.0%
Ted Cruz: 6.5%
Ben Carson: 3.3%
Bob Ehrlich: 2.9%
Chris Christie: 2.4%
Carly Fiorina: 2.3%
Lindsey Graham: 2.2%
Jim Gilmore: 1.5%
Other: 1.2%
