How does this affect the 2016 race?

A lot of Republicans look really foolish, but still get way more votes than they ought to.

I think everyone was assuming this was going to happen except for the most fringe right wingers, so no effect on the trajectory.

Huckabee has already condemned it. Predictable. If I remember correctly, Carson has compared homosexuality with bestiality or something in the past, so he is probably also neither very happy right now I imagine.

Jindal and Huckabee oppose the ruling, obviously.

Jeb took a more nuanced view stating:  “Guided by my faith, I believe in traditional marriage. I believe the Supreme Court should have allowed the states to make this decision,” Bush said in the statement. “I also believe that we should love our neighbor and respect others, including those making lifetime commitments. In a country as diverse as ours, good people who have opposing views should be able to live side by side. It is now crucial that as a country we protect religious freedom and the right of conscience and also not discriminate.”

Walker calls for a Constitutional amendment to overturn the ruling.

Ben Carson stated: "While I strongly disagree with the Supreme Court’s decision, their ruling is now the law of the land."

Christie, Kasich, Bush, Pataki and possibly Walker and Trump will take the 'It's a settled issue even though I hate it' line.

Rick Perry says marriage should still be left to the states and that he would appoint "strict Constitutional Conservatives" to the Court to ensure that this is the case.

Reading and hearing a lot of the conservative comments already, I can tell this is becoming strictly a states rights issue for them. They're no longer in the future going to (or I would be very surprised if they would) oppose it on moral grounds, but rather states rights grounds where they think domestic partnerships should be settled. This is the first step in SSM becoming settled. By 2020 I doubt it will even be discussed much.

It'd be nice if at least one of the GOP hopefuls acknowledged SSM was now a settled issue, but I guess its still too soon to hope for that. Maybe in 2020.

Edit: Apparently, Carson said it is "the law of the land." Somehow missed that earlier. Still, all the GOP candidates that actually have a shot still haven't said it.

I think one (?) already has called it "the law of the land".

EDIT: That's literally what Carson said, it's just above me

In what sense did John Roberts let Trump down? Does this mean that The Donald supports marriage equality?

That tweet must refer to Obamacare ruling.

Trump obviously supports marriage quality whether or not he admits it.

I think Santorum has gone into a permanent depression.

If he's smart to his own mental health, he'll simply call in sick today and stop campaigning forever. Tongue

k

Anyway, it's definitely going to become an issue in the campaign in that candidates will have to pledge to nominate only those that will strike down gay marriage and Obamacare. Of course, the vast majority of those people are impossible to confirm, but the base won't care.

I honestly missed that when I made my post.

Still, Carson has no shot of winning and none of the real GOP hopefuls have acknowledged it as settled.

This issue is not settled. 4-3 Traditional marriage wins because the advocates of marriage supremacy (gay marriage) have no honor in recusing over conflict of interest.
