In both presidential elections, the home state of the Republican candidate was Arizona

No other Republican performed so bad in the North than Goldwater and McCain. Johnson 1964 and Obama 2008 were the only Democrats to carry all the Northern square, from Iowa to Maine.
But not because Northern voters have a special dislike for Arizona Republicans. Just a coincidence.

McCain carried all Goldwater states. But there were some states carried by Johnson and McCain.
