You had to go and qualify it like that. At this point, Christie is a bad candidate, and the fact that he's dumb enough to run only makes it even harder to take him seriously.

But lets pretend that there are some great speeches and he's somehow cleared of all wrongdoing. (Basically, he manages to reset himself to 2012 Christie.)  In such a situation, my first thought is Rubio (younger, southern, minority, pretty scandal-free), a degree of Tea Party appeal. He basically hits a sweet spot between Jeb and Cruz.

Hopefully, he is the nominee and he will pick a Latino as his VP.

Tim Pawlenty. He's a former governor, more conservative than Christie, and could appeal in the Midwest.

Whether Christie can win the nomination or not is not the question.  The question is who would be the best running mate for Christie.

Unlike most of the above replies, I will give some serious names in response to this question.

Since Christie is a Governor, a U.S. Senator would prove to be useful as one who would have legislative and DC experience.

Senator Tom Cotton of Arkansas, young, up and coming, well educated
Senator Marco Rubio of Florida, young, experienced, would help in the crucial state of Florida
Senator Mark Kirk of Illinois, would help in the Midwest
Senator Ben Sasse of Nebraska, young, new generation of Republican, extremely well educated
Senator Rob Portman of Ohio, experienced, would help in the crucial state of Ohio and in the Midwest
Senator John Thune of South Dakota, safe, solid, non controversial, experienced
Senator Shelley Ann Capito of West Virginia, experienced, respected, adds a female to the ticket, which may prove useful in this campaign

Shortlist...

Susanna Martinez- Reelected swing state Governor who adds several forms of diversity, while doubling down on effective parts of Christie's record (prosecutor turned Governor.)

Marco Rubio- Young. Effective politician. Hispanic. Comes from key swing state. Knows Washington.

Nikki Haley- Adds diversity. Allows Christie distance from Washington. Dealt well with national media attention in the last few weeks.

Condoleeza Rice- Diversity and foreign policy experience. High name recognition. Can handle media scrutiny well.

Rob Portman- Comes from key swing state. Experienced on financial issues. Knows Washington.

John Kasich- Key swing state and impressive resume. Likely to gain name recognition through a presidential run.

People that came to my mind:

Marco Rubio
John Thune
Rob Portman
Tim Scott
Susana Martinez
Condoleezza Rice

So basically I agree with a lot of what others have been saying.
