No monument at the State Capital.

Some (I"m not allowed to say who) are predicting the end of times thanks to this and the gay marriage ruling.  Roll Eyes

Good. It has them ordered wrong anyway. It combines the first and second into one commandment and splits the tenth into two commandments.

Absolutely awful.  Another judicial activist -- that monument wasn't hurting anyone.

Absolutely awful.  Another judicial activist attack, that monument wasn't hurting anyone.

As a non-Christian, I take offense to breaches of Church and State, and giving favoritism to one religion. Of course, nobody would be complaining if this were some excerpt of Sharia law.

Fresh wave of doomsday predictions coming with requisite Bible code or allegory to back them up! Tongue

No, it's a wise decision as the Ten Commandments have nothing to do with modern law or legal opinion. Not in the West anyway, I'll make that caveat.

I don't really understand why people bother to get upset? I mean it's just a silly statue, right? Why bother ruffling feathers with little symbolic crap like taking down a religious monument?

Why ruffle feathers by putting it up?

Fallacy alert.

Thanks for alerting us to the fallacy in your post that putting it up and not taking it down are exactly the same.

The Oklahoma Justices I think profoundly misunderstand SCOTUS law. This monument does not violate the Constitutional prohibition about the state getting unduly enmeshed in religion, if only because it has historical provenance. Weird. Granted, I don't know the Court's rational, so maybe I am making assumptions here.

Oh, it is based on the Oklahoma Constitution, which prohibits using state property to advance religion. It still has it wrong if it desired to track SCOTUS reasoning based on essentially the same concept, but whatever. Who would have thought Oklahoma?

The 10 Commandments have no historical significance. The idea that murder is bad was not unique to ancient Hebrews.

What I've got they used to call the blues
Nothin' is really wrong
Feelin' like I don't belong
Walkin' around
Some kind of lonely clown

Don't let yourself get too upset about this.

Fine decision, people can see the ten commandments anywhere (the internet, the bible, etc.)

The fact that by displaying the Ten Commandments, Oklahoma is in fact endorsing a religion, which is an obvious violation of the First Amendment's Establishment Clause. I'd call you a troll, but then again, what you say is pretty typical of Republicans, who are just plain stupid. Why don't you move to Alabama, where Roy Moore made a complete ass of himself over this very issue?

Yeah, that's bad considering they view themselves to be such good Christians. Don't even know what the 10 commandments are or where to go to double check?

The Satanists have abandoned their attempt to place their own monument on state capitol grounds in response to the ruling.

If this were prohibited under the Constitution, the monument would have never been erected.  What the 1st amendment says is *Congress* shall make no law respecting an *establishment* of religion. Congress did not make a law in Oklahoma, and Oklahoma did not establish a religion.

Where I choose to live is entirely up to me. I am sorry that you are hostile towards the free exercise clause, but it's still there.

The federal courts I believe already spoke on this issue, I can't remember the exact case, but I do remember Justice Stephen Breyer casting the deciding vote in favor.

The ruling was made under the Oklahoma state constitution.

Article II, Section 5
No public money or property shall ever be appropriated,
applied, donated, or used, directly or indirectly, for the use,
benefit, or support of any sect, church, denomination, or system
of religion, or for the use, benefit, or support of any priest,
preacher, minister, or other religious teacher or dignitary, or
sectarian institution as such.
