Any chance POTUS decides to endorse Hillary in order to give her some more liberal street fred (despite the fact that she doesn't really need it) and to stop a socialist from ruining the party's chances at 12 years in the White House?

I seriously doubt it, although I do think it would help the Democratic ticket significantly. Has a sitting president ever endorsed someone before the candidate clinched the nomination?

So what do you call Truman's hunt for Stevenson in '52 when there was a perfectly good maverick who could've done a much better job?

Or how about Humphrey '68,  pretty sure LBJ was definitely there for that one.

If Obama does endorse, I don't think he'll come forward untill February, at the earliest. If he does endorse, he'll probably endorse before or right after Super Tuesday. So either in February or (the beginning of) March.

He'll endorse Hillary after she steamrolls Bernie Sanders in the primaries.

Yeah, 0% chance of a Sanders endorsement from Obama.

I agree. I think Obama would be happy to endorse this year, but Hillary would prefer to look like she's winning this nomination on her own merits. An early Obama endorsement would fuel the coronation narrative.

The earliest he'd endorse would be after Iowa, but I imagine he'll wait till Super Tuesday.

I think Obama will hold off until somebody (read: Clinton) locks up the nomination.

Has a President ever not endorsed their VP in the primaries? Because Obama might break that precedent, if there is one.

Biden probably won't run, and there's no way Obama would endorse him if Clinton is still in the race (hasn't imploded or died). I would be extremely surprised if he endorsed anyone before a majority of delegates was won by someone (and by someone I mean Clinton).

I suspect Obama endorses Clinton only after she clinches the nomination (next February/March).

Obama will endorse after the primary.

However, I'm sure Obama wishes he could endorse someone during the primary. Obama and Clinton have their differences; he's a good campaigner and bad at governing, she's a bad campaigner and probably slightly less bad at governing but not by much. He picked her to be his Secretary of State for political reasons, he really does not like her.

But, who has embraced Obama's policies? There is a candidate for President who expanded medicaid under Obamacare, threw more money at expensive failing schools, gave tax breaks to companies for an off-shore wind farm, gave tax subsidies and other contracts to the politically connected, supports corporate welfare, and there is a candidate for President who has as big an ego as Obama:

He'll wait until it becomes clear Hillary really needs it to secure the nomination.

Didn't Obama already endorse Hillary?

However, I'm sure Michelle Obama will do so.

If you're talking about Estes Kefauver in 1952, he was an alcoholic (and a heavy smoker) who dropped dead suddenly from a heart attack in 1963.  His drinking was an open secret in Washington.

LBJ was for HHH, and everyone knew it.  The surrogates who ran on LBJs behalf in primaries (before he dropped out) were all for Humphrey.

It's not an endorsement, but at this point, it's as good as she's going to get.
