The NVP narrowly won the election of 1983, yet far from an absolute majority, they had to enter an unstable three-party-coalition government with the newly very strong FPÖ under Norbert Steger and the CSP, which again had suffered losses. Alois Mock was sworn in as Chancellor in September, succeding Johanna Dohnal, while Norbert Steger followed Christian Broda as vice-chancellor.

The new government had just a narrow majority, and thus was unable to pass much of its agenda, in part also due to the CSP centrist stances and Waldheim's LKP often voting against the government out of spite. Unable to pass a budget in autumn of 1985, and with the CSP leaving the government in opposition to the proposal, new elections were called for January 1986.

Following the referendum, Austria's first nuclear power plant was constructed and put into use at Zwentendorf. While Mock was personally oppposed to it, he was bound to follow the people's wishes on the issue, but in turn did not comission plans for further plants.

Meanwhile, two new forces had appeared on the Austrian political scene. Jörg Haider, who had failed to unstage the liberal FPÖ leadership at the party convention in 1985, left said party with a large chunk of its nationalist wing, and founded a new party, called "Die Patrioten" (The Patriots).
Stemming from opposition to the Zwentendorf plant, Austria's environmental movement organised itsself as a new party, the "Alternativ-Grüne Liste" (Alternative Green List) in 1984. They are led by Freda Meissner-Blau, a prominent environemntal, feminist and anti-war activist.

NVP:
Chancellor Mock's party hopes to form a "coalition of the centre-right" with the FPÖ. They campaign for tax cuts, in order to spur economic growth, and the privatisation of a share of Austria's many nationalised industries, as well as generally an economically more liberal platform.

FPÖ:
The FPÖ, led by Norbert Steger, has lost its nationalist wing, in turn reaffirming its generally liberal and internationalist message. Their main talking point is to "catch up to Western Europe", by joining the NATO and the European community projects, as well as to easen foreign trade in general by renouncing the protectionism that dominated post-war Austrian economic policy.

KPÖ:
Johanna Dohnal still on top, the KPÖ remains the largest opposition party, and fully attacks the government on its proposed policies. They defame its proposed agenda of economic liberation as benefiting only the elites and hurting the average Austrians, and instead call to continue Austria's path "between the blocs", as a neutral nation "picking the best of both systems".

SPÖ:
With Franz Vranitzky as new leader, the SPÖ still remains in alliance with the KPÖ, trying to unseat the government. They heavily support keeping Austria's protectionist policies in place, claiming anything other would only hurt Austria's economy. They also strongly affirm Austria's neutral status, and oppose proposals to join the European Community or even the NATO.

LKP:
After huge losses, Waldheim resigned as leader of the LKP, and was succeded by Wolfgang Schüssel, but the former would remain potent and one of the most important players in the Austrian political scene. The LKP supports the government's proposed tax cuts, but is a strong opponent of its "economical liberation" in regards to foreign trade. They also oppose Austrian membership in both EEC and NATO.

CSP:
Now led by Alois Partl, lieutanant governor of Tyrol, the CSP is campaigning nearly exclusively in that state, its stronghold. They voice their farmer's consticuency favourite issue, increase of farm subsidies especially for mountain farmers, and logically oppose the government's economic policy.

Die Patrioten:
Jörg Haider's new party is running a far-right, nationalist campaign, capitalising on xenophoby and the fears of parts of the populace. They oppose any further immigration to Austria, wanting to keep the nation's borders closed, especially in regards to Turkish and Yugolsav immigrants that have come to Austria in the years before.

AGL:
Austria's first green party, the AGL, is running very much on an environmental, "hippie" platform, in opposition to nuclear power and pressing for the development of Austria's renewable, "green" energy sources, while keeping the nature intact. Asides from their core issue, they run economically near to the KPÖ and SPÖ.

I never thought I would say this, but I think I'm going to have to go with the FPÖ this time.  With the loss of the horrible Haider faction, they seem like a solid centre-right liberal choice.

Not completely considering AGL-KPO-SPO has about 33% of the votes.

Note to Self: Don't post at 1am.

Yes, this series appears to have a right drift sometimes, but then again, we must not forget that TL-Austria has had two KPÖ-led governments so far, and judging by the state of the still present vast authority of the state on the economy (in widely nationalised industry, for example), TL-Austria is far too the left of every other Western European country.
