Scott Stringer challenges de Blasio in the Democratic Primary, both get over 40% and Stringer wins in the runoff. He then defeats Som E. Dude in the general with over 65%

Cuomo endorses Stringer in the primary, Stringer wins rather easily after Cuomo essentially neutralizes De Blasio by stonewalling him for two years on major policy proposals. The GOP doesn't seriously contest Stringer's election.

It's difficult for me to see De Blasio going down in a primary, even if many establishment Dems turn on him, because he seems to have a solid hold on white liberals and has strong support in the black community. Together they form an unstoppable force in the city primaries. The only way I see him losing is if the establishment rallies behind an African American who can seriously chip away at his core constituencies.

I could actually see De Blasio opting out of running for reelection in favor of challenging Cuomo in the 2018 Democratic primaries. There's a lot of discontent with Cuomo from other Democrats and i'd be surprised if he didn't face a primary challenge.

If deblasio is the dem nominee how bad do they do upstate? can he lose in a midterm or will he do strong enough in the city that it won't matter?

Cuomo will endorse Stringer or Hakeem Jeffries in the 2017 NYC Democratic primary, and the Republicans will pick State Sen. Andrew Lanza from Staten Island to run for mayor.

This. The DeBlasio is toast routine is just a TAD premature, but tons overblown.

Why would Andrew Lanza run? He has a safe seat and would have no chance of being Mayor? He's going to wait his turn and eventually replace Donovan in Congress (let's be real, with SI's track record...it might not be a long wait haha)

I think deblasio will win reelection. I don;t know if he'd win the primary for governor. A New York City mayor has not been elected governor or to higher office since 1868.

Although it might not be as interesting as some of the other stuff that people want to try and dream up, this is probably what's going to happen.

Not if Cuomo really doesn't want him to.

And regardless of how people feel about him here, Cuomo still holds far more sway in the state party than De Blasio does.

I guess that it depends on how strong the Republican nominee is. If it's Chris Gibson whose from upstate he might be a bit of a threat.

He beat Lhota by almost 50%.  And, Joe Lhota was the moderate, more popular and polished candidate who beat Catsimatidis in the primary.  And, Joe Lhota doesn't look like this.

de Blasio will not face any "establishment" challenge at this rate.  it's more likely that de Blasio backs a primary challenge to Cuomo than vice versa.

Unlikely that NYC Democrats care about opposition from the police union.

Which is really good. You have to watch out for Democrats in Name Only in the state of New York. And one has to really scrutinize each individual Democratic politician. (If Gov. Andrew Cuomo were to ever seek the Democratic presidential nomination, I would vote around him.)

Cuomo isn't God. He just thinks he is.

Cuomo can make De Blasio a failed Mayor and then fund a challenger. It's very simple.

Fact is, De Blasio has always been seeking a war with Cuomo, from day one where he refused to take Cuomo's funding for Pre-K without the tax hike he wanted. Every time something doesn't go his way, he insults and attacks Cuomo. Well, now he has the war he wants, and it's not going to go well for him.
