Down to 20 holdout and 2 unknown now. Alabama has 12 holdouts, Kentucky and Texas each have 4. One county in both of the later states have joined.

Combined, the remaining states make up 0.13% of the population.

Come on Alabama, it's been over a month now.

Absent the national guard forcing every county office to comply, there will be at least 1 holdout county in AL for all of time. Even hundreds of years from now, there will still be at least 1 holdout county in AL. I'm completely serious.

There's a very good chance AL will be majority-black in 100 years.  If that's the case, it would be one of the most progressive places in the country on civil rights issues come the 22nd century.

You vastly overestimate the social liberalism of Southern blacks.....

She's an elected official, not an employee so she can't be fired, only impeached or voted out of office.

Looks like that's what's in store for her. The updated story says that the lawyers representing the couples seeking marriage licenses have filed a motion to have her held in contempt of court. For now they're seeking fines, not incarceration. Unfortunately, even if she ultimately ends up jailed for contempt the federal court can't remove her from office. If possible the state legislature should act to impeach her immediately since this woman clearly has no interest in performing the duties of her elected office.

You just know she winds up with a sweetheart gig as the poster child for the government persecuting Christians. She'll be on the speaking circuit and probably churn out a column or two every month for a couple of crazy websites, and she'll wind up financially much better off than she was before.

Can't someone simply just overrule this ideologue and issue the licenses? I saw that someone affiliated with her said that SS couples can just go to another county, and I thought that was utterly preposterous. So then this woman can use her religious beliefs to blatantly defy the Constitution and deny people their rights? She has no idea what can of worms she is trying in futility to open.

That woman's going to wind up a millionaire, just like that sh**tty pizza joint in Indiana. Bravo to her for figuring out a way to change social classes.

You're all overestimating the extent to which homophobia will be tolerated in the future, even in places like Alabama.

Well that escalated quickly. But yeah, this was the inevitable and appropriate result. That being said, facebook is going to be unbearable for the next week, isn't it?

I assume she'll also be released if she resigns, is impeached,  or her term expires?

I bet she stays in as long as possible to make a point.

Yeah, they have to release her if she resigns or is removed as at that point it would become impossible for her to carry out the court order.

This is fycked up.  They can't fire her for not doing this but they can jail her?

The world is oh so much safer I'm sure with her behind bars.

What would you have the court do instead to enforce its order? She has the keys to her own release. All she has to do is either agree to comply or resign her position, and she's free to go.
